We all are on our unique journey to become the best version of ourselves. I say journey because happiness or success is not a destination. This is a very important aspect that took me some time to really understand, but there is no such thing as “ when i get this job, i will be happy “ or “ when i loose x kilos i will feel beautiful „. Things are much more complex and as you go through life you make decisions everyday that influence who you are and who you will become.
There are so many aspects to our lives, whether your wish is to become smarter, kinder, more successful, more caring, more attractive, less stressed, a better friend, partner, employee – a better person, it all comes down to the little decisions you make each and everyday. Are you going to pick up that book and read before bed or scroll mindless through Instagram? Are you going to do that workout or stay on the couch? Are you going to say yes to that new project even though you’re overworked?
The accumulation of all these decisions create our personality and our lifestyle.
NEWSFLASH: We have the power to control these decisions.
You can break down the decision-making process in psychological, cognitive and normative. This basically describes the different angles human beings consider before making a decision. First we look at our needs, preferences and values, secondly we consider how our decision would influence our environment and following actions and then we look at what the choice would lead us to in the longterm.
Knowing this can make life easier. „Decision-Fatigue“ is a real thing, where we tend to only consider the first angle, which focuses on our needs and preferences. These can be comfort, fatigue, laziness and are not often in line with our longterm goals. When we make sure to consider all three angles and focus on the longterm outcome that our choice will lead us to, our chances of making the right decision for our future self increases drastically.
Apart from the decisions we make daily there are other ways we can support ourselves in becoming the person we want to be. Below you can find 6 inspiring Ted Talks on Self Improvement that will help and motivate you to take the required steps towards your goals!
